Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough and their Rock of Ages costars just couldn't cut it this weekend at the movies.

Debuting Friday, the highly-anticipated big screen adaption of the '80s Broadway rock musical failed to bring audiences to theaters, with the Adam Shankman-directed flick raking in an underwhelming $15.1 million.

Adding insult to injury: Madagascar 3, the animated animal-themed kiddie flick featuring the voices of Ben Stiller and Chris Rock, netted $35.5 million this weekend more than Adam Sandler's That's My Boy ($13 million) and Rock of Ages combined.

Charlize Theron's Prometheus sat comfortably in second place this weekend, netting $20.2 million in ticket sales during its second week in theaters.

Rock of Ages placed third, followed by Kristen Stewart's Snow White and the Huntsman ($13.8 million) and the Sandler-Andy Samberg comedy That's My Boy.
